Where is regensburg?
Regensburg is a small city located in the Bavarian region of Germany, just Northeast of Munich. The city is most famous for its preserved medieval center, making it a charming backdrop to the Christmas markets that pop up throughout the city during the Holiday season.
Is the Regensburg Christmas Market Worth Visiting?
Wondering whether the Regensburg Christmas market is worth visiting? After having personally visited over 7 German Christmas markets, the short answer is yes! The city of Regensburg is incredibly picturesque (as you can see in the photos in this post it was dense in fog the day we visited, adding to the ambience), has a handful of Christmas markets and is easy to visit as a day trip from Munich.
The size of Regensburg also makes it a great place to visit, if you’re wanting to avoid some of the crowds found in larger Christmas market cities such as Munich or Cologne.
Regensburg might be too small to be the only destination on your German Christmas market trip, but would be a great city to stay in for one night, or to pop in and visit for a day as you’re traveling through Germany.
regensberg christmas markets
Despite it being on the small side, Regensburg has a surprising number of Christmas markets to offer, scattered walking distance throughout the old town. You can easily pop from one to the other, stopping for lunch in between, and enjoying the beautiful medieval architecture as your wander through Regensburg’s quiet streets.
The Regensburg Christmas Market on Neupfarrplatz
We started our Regensburg Christmas market exploration by visiting the market in the center of old Regensburg at Neupfarrplatz. The Christmas market stalls wrap around Regensburg’s New parish church, and offers everything a traditional Bavarian Christmas market would, such as delicious bites to eat and ornaments and crafts for your shopping needs.
The market is small and we spent roughly 20 minutes wandering through the market stalls before heading to our next destination.
This market is open from November 27 to December 23, 2024 (check the tourism Regensburg website for updated hours).
Sunday to Wednesday 10 am - 8 pm
Thursday to Saturday 10 am - 9 pm
Lucrezia Market
A short walk from the Neupfarrplatz is the Lurezia Christmas market in Regensburg. The market is spread out across Haidplatz and Kohlenmarkt and offers handcrafted goods and unique cuisines. The handmade items are some of the most beautiful and well done I’ve seen at a Christmas market, and I purchased a variety of homemade bathbombs and soaps for my friends.
We grabbed lunch near the market at Cafe Lila to escape the cold - it was cozy and delicious!
This Lucrezia Market in Regensburg is open from November 27 to December 23, 2024 (check the tourism Regensburg website for updated hours).

Romantic Christmas Market at Thurn and Taxis Palace
One of the reasons we chose Regensburg as a day trip from Munich is due to the number of Christmas markets the city had to offer, including the Romantic Christmas Market at Thurn and Taxis Palace. The Romantic Christmas Market at Thurn and Taxis Palace is a Christmas Market set within an actual German castle that is still occupied by Princess Gloria of Thurn und Taxis and her family.
It requires tickets to enter, which you can purchase on site, and once inside you’ll discover firepits to gather around, a plethora of cuisine, a small area with rides for children and even a petting zoo.
The Thurn and Taxis Palace is close to the train station, so we decided to end our day here before catching our train back to Munich.
The Romantic Christmas Market at Thurn and Taxis Palace is open from November 24 to December 23, 2024 (closed Sunday, 24th November 2024). You can purchase your tickets ahead of time here.
Monday to Thursday 3 pm - 10 pm
Friday and Saturday 12 pm - 11 pm
Sunday 12 pm - 10 pm
how to take a day trip from munich to regensburg
Regensburg is only a 1.5 hour train trip from Munich, making it a perfect day trip destination. The train between the two cities is direct and there are also a lot of train per day, meaning you have some flexibility when planning your day trip.
We simply booked tickets from Munich to Regensburg (and vice versa) on trainline. The train in Munich leaves from Munich Hbf, which you can either reach by metro or by walking. Once you’ve arrived in Regensburg, the walk from the Regensburg train station to Neupfarrpl (where the first Christmas market in this post is located) is only 11 minutes.
how much time you’ll need to explore the regensburg christmas markets
As Regensburg has so much to offer, we recommend planning for an entire day to see the Regensburg Christmas markets. You can do this by taking a morning train from Munich and then an early evening train back. One thing to remember is that the days in November and December are quite short, and often very cold, meaning a “full day” might be shorter than it would in the summer.
