25 Best Coffee Shops in Paris, France (2024)

best-coffee-shops-paris-2022

When you think of Paris, odds are you don’t think of the plethora of bean-forward coffee shops that have become ever so popular in the United States. Instead, you’ll likely envision that classic curbside cafe, where a bistro table is outfitted with a croissant and a cafe au lait.

Quite truthfully, that is still the vast reality of coffee in Paris. And it is a reality I am thankful for because I never want that classic French nostalgia to leave.

However, when we moved to Paris in January of 2022, I didn’t really know just how difficult it would be to find a coffee shop that I could cozy up in all day. I had my tried-and-true shops in the US that knew my order and would let me come live there for as long as I needed. But in Paris, that culture was harder to find than I anticipated. Here’s why:

MANY FRENCH COFFEE SHOPS AREN’T LAPTOP FRIENDLY

Bummer, right?! As we were packing and planning our move to Paris, I imagined myself in a cute little French cafe, with my laptop in tow, editing and blogging to my heart’s desires.

The reality?

The majority of coffee shops in Paris don’t allow laptops. They even have little signs that call-out the fact that they are a laptop-free cafe. So what’s the deal?

First and foremost, the French are pros at the art of doing one thing at a time. You’ll never see them carrying more than they can tow around the city. You won’t find them in the park talking on their phones. They are present in whatever singular activity they are doing.

This is never more evident or more true than when the French are eating (or drinking) something. Whether it’s a meal, coffee or glass of wine, those shared moments are meant to simply be just that. A break from the day to sit and chat and enjoy being present with another human being.

The coffee shops of Paris are of the same culture. When you enter the coffee shop doors, it’s not a place of work, rather, it is a social event and a time to pull away from your l’ordinateur (screen).

The second, more practical reason that many Parisian coffee shops are laptop free is the simple lack of space on the interior of the shop. Stores and restaurants and yes, coffee shops are as typically small as you expect them to be, meaning they don’t want you to take up the one of five tables with your computer all day.

All that to say, if you’re planning a remote working trip to Paris and imagine waltzing into any Paris coffee shop and plopping down to work, you might want to think again. That isn’t to say it’s entirely off the table. Your Parisian hotel likely has a working space, and there are some shops that you can spend your day working from (which I’ve highlighted in this post), however, sometimes there is a daily fee to work there (on top of the food or drinks you order) and the spaces that are laptop friendly might be pretty crowded.

THE Parisian COFFEE SHOPS

Now that the bad is out of the way, let’s get to the good. And the good is that there is tres bien (very good) coffee in Paris. And some very cool places to drink it from. After I got my first few star-struck months of living here out of the way and doing ALL the touristy things, I started to scout out the best of the best coffee shops in Paris. Heading to one of the Parisian coffee shops below is my favorite way to spend a rainy day in Paris, and my favorite place to catch up with friends.

1) boot cafe (3ème Arrondissement)

If you find yourself in the 3eme arrondissement in Paris (which you should, it’s one of the hippest areas with some of the best shopping), stop to grab a cup of caffeine from the adorable Boot Cafe. Located in an old cordonnerie (shoe repair shop), its facade is one of the cutest in Paris and the interior is just as quaint. If you’re lucky, grab one of the few bistro tables inside, or get your coffee à emporter (take away).

Location: 19 rue du Pont aux Choux, 75003 Paris

Hours: Every Day 10AM-6PM

Laptop-Friendly: No

2) Clove Coffee Shop (Montmartre)

Clove Coffee Shop opened in August of 2022 by partners Ella and Florent. They have a charming space located as you come down the stairs from the top of Montmartre, and it’s the perfect pitstop for taking a break before heading on to your next Parisian destination. It’s one of my favorite spots for passing some time on a rainy day in Paris.

Location: 14 Rue Chappe, 75018 Paris

Hours: Friday to Monday 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Laptop-Friendly: No

3) Partisan Café (3ème arrondissement)

Located along a Parisian bike path, Partisan Café brings the outdoors in with all glass walls, often open to the exterior where bikers and Parisians are found fellowshipping and sipping on their delicious coffee. It’s a rather large space, so you shouldn’t have issues finding a seat whether you prefer interior or exterior. Come with your journal, your favorite book or your coffee-loving amis (friends).

Location: 36 rue de Turbigo, 75003 Paris

Hours: Monday-Friday 8h30 - 18h00 | Weekends 9h00 - 18h30

Laptop-Friendly: No

4) on partage (11ème arrondissement)

Walking in to On Partage in the 11ème arrondissement of Paris feels a bit like coming home. The space has a warm charm that greets you upon entering and is the perfect spot to enjoy a brunch or lunch with friends or ton amour (your love). A cappuccino is my go-to coffee order, and they had one of the best I’ve had in Paris. They also had the best cookie I’ve had since my time in Paris, so if you’re into cookies and coffee, this is your place.

Location: 137 B rue de Charonne, Paris 11

Hours: Monday-Saturday 8h30-17h

Laptop-Friendly: Not 100% sure, but my guess is no.

5) SAFE Urban Concept (3ème arrondissement)

Coffee shop in the front and concept store in the back, we found Safe Urban Concept on one of our first days in Paris. This is less of a location to visit for the artisan coffee experience, and more of a space if you need to get some work done for the day. No one will judge you if you plug in, put your headphones on and sip multiple espressos as the hours pass by. They do require a minimum amount spent (or you can pay for the entire day at once), but I usually just order a coffee, then a snack, then lunch, etc.

Location: 11 rue Commines - 75003 Paris

Hours: Monday to Saturday 8:30 AM to 9 PM

Laptop-Friendly: Yes (outlets at each table)

Free Wifi

6) Bonjour Jacob (6ème & 10ème Arrondissements)

The concept here is good coffee and good books/magazines. The location in the 6ème arrondissement is located steps from Pont Neuf and is a great location if you need a break during your Paris wanderings. That location only sells magazines, while the location in the 10ème sells both magazines and books.

Locations: 28 Rue Yves Toudic 75010 & 30 Rue dauphine 75006

Hours: Every Day 8H30 - 19h

7) Certified cafe (Beaupassage & Passage des Panoramas)

Certified Cafe has a Paris footprint with two locations, both in different passages of Paris. The first location can be found in the Passage des Panoramas, one of my favorite covered passages, a must-see in Paris, and is take-away only. The second location is in Beaupassage and has both an indoor and outdoor seating space. The indoor space has a decent number of tables and some outlets available. The Beaupassage location is a good place to grab a coffee on your way to visit the Rodin Museum nearby.

Locations: 44 Passage des Panoramas 75002 & 53 Rue de Grenelle 75007

Hours: Panoramas: Mon-Friday 9AM-6PM (takeaway only) / Beaupassage: Mon-Friday 8:30AM-18

Laptop-Friendly: Beaupassage: Yes

8) Maison Fleuret (6ème Arrondissement)

I accidentally stumbled into this coffee shop on the second day they opened, and their concept is still one of my favorites in all of Paris. The owners converted a prior ancient bookstore into a modern-day coffee shop, and the current space features the original bookshelves, lined with neutral-colored books. Add in an iron spiral staircase leading up to a small loft of tables and this is the place of my dreams. They offer all of the coffee classics as well as pastries and lunch.

Locations: 30 Rue des Saints-Pères, 75006 Paris

Hours: 9am - 6:30pm (open every day)

Laptop-Friendly: No

9) Saint Pearl (7ème arrondissement)

A very popular spot for both locals and tourists, Saint Pearl is more of a brunch restaurant than a coffee shop, however their coffee beverages are pretty tasty. If you order food, be sure to get the Flowery Pancakes for the most beautiful pancakes that you won’t want to eat. You can order take away coffee if you just need a cup of joe, and just know that if you go during lunch hour, you’ll likely have to wait in line. P.S. - there is no public bathroom.

Locations: 38 rue des Saints Peres, Paris, 75007

Hours: 7am - 7pm (open every day, weekend hours differ)

Laptop-Friendly: No

With locations scattered throughout the city, odds are you will find yourself near a Café Kitsuné at some point during your day in Paris. My favorite spot is located in Palais Royal, and I often wait in the line to grab an afternoon cappuccino or macchiato to sip on while taking a break in the beautiful gardens of Palais Royal. In the Palais Royal location, there is only outdoor seating, but their other locations are laptop free.

11) Noir Coffee Shop (1eme,7Eme,8eme,16eme, Marché Dauphine & Ile Saint-Louis)

With locations opening across the city, Noir Coffee is another option you’ll likely run into throughout your explorations of Paris. The Ile Saint-Louis location is my favorite spot to work (the location has a furnished basement with outlets), and they just recently opened a location in Marché Dauphine, a great place to take a break during your day of antiquing. No lunch option, but they do have some pastries.

12) Terres de Cafe (3eme, 17eme, 7eme, 6eme)

A pioneer in the field of "specialty coffees" in France, Terres de Cafe is really a spot to visit if you are a coffee connoisseur. The brand was recognized in 2017 as the first specialty coffee roaster in France, and you can even purchase any of their coffees in bean or pod-form. The location is the 7eme arrondissement is very near the Eiffel Tower and a great spot to take a break when in the area.

Locations: 1st Arrondissement, 4th Arrondissement, 3rd Arrondissement, 6th Arrondissement, 7th Arrondissement, 17th Arrondissement

Hours: Every Day 9am to 7pm

The interior architecture of the cafe is quite relaxing and features a combination of both aged wooden beams and modern arched entryways. There is a decent amount of seating, and the honey latte was one of the best I’ve had in Paris (normally you can’t find flavored lattes at Parisian coffee shops, so this was a pleasant surprise).
